Foundations of Community Practice (Non Specialist Practice Qualification)
A review of community nursing education programmes throughout Wales (commissioned by the Welsh
Assembly Government in 2006) led to the decision that future provision of education for practitioners working in the community will focus on a modularised approach. This new modularised approach enables the provision of an educational framework that matches the profile of different roles within community nursing teams. The module in particular will focus its attention on the many challenges facing practitioners today who work in this continuously changing yet challenging environment.
The module addresses the recommendations put forward in recent policy documents Community Nursing Strategy (WAG, 2009) and Together for Health (WG, 2011).
This module will follow the design and structure (as dictated by the All Wales working group for community nurse education) of the core community module in that there are 4 themes which form the underlying content of the module. The themes are as follows:
1. Community as the context of care;
2. Professional Role and Accountability;
3. Clinical Practice in the Community;
4. The Family.

The Social Aspects of Long Term and Chronic Illness
Students will be enabled to consider the social aspects of long term and chronic illness to gain understanding of the effects on the individual and society. The module will provide an opportunity to learn about the lived experiences of people, throughout the life course, whose lives are affected by long term and chronic illness. Consideration will be given also to the study of carers¿ experiences, examining their role and how their needs may be met. The module will focus on aspects of long term and chronic condition management that are overlooked in bio-medical approaches by examining in detail how people make sense of and cope with long term and chronic illness. It will also encourage practitioners to critically evaluate the delivery of care to patients with long term and chronic conditions and their carers within its strategic framework.

Introduction to Professional Practice (Child)
The philosophy of the module is the belief that continued development underpins professional practice. Throughout their professional lives, qualified nurses need to take responsibility for their own learning and development. In order to achieve this, they need to be able to recognise their learning and developmental needs, developing appropriate strategies to fulfil them. Development encompasses both personal and professional aspects as one cannot be separated from the other.
This module draws on the content of other modules within the year and experiences in practice to introduce the concept of professional practice. The students will demonstrate this learning through the medium of a portfolio and by producing a patchwork text.

Promoting the Public Health of Populations
The module is designed to develop the knowledge and skills of practitioners in public health practice and primary health care. This will require that practitioners have an understanding of the underpinning concepts and approaches to public health practice and the role of public health in primary health care. Collaborative ways of working between sectors will be explored within the above context in order that students can plan and evaluate strategies for the improvement of health of individuals, groups and local populations. They will develop skills to work with others to plan, implement and evaluate programmes and projects, as well as appraising policies to recommend changes to improve health and well-being. Chronic or Persistent Pain Management
The experience of chronic or persistent pain has a major impact upon a person¿s quality of life and it can often limit their level of physical functioning. Therefore, it is important to have effective strategies and treatment options available to decide the best method of clinical intervention. There are two main approaches to chronic or persistent pain management ¿ pharmacological and non-pharmacological (i.e. electrotherapy, massage, acupuncture, etc). This module will examine each option in terms of its evidence base and clinical application.
