About

My research focuses on devices and interactions designed with and for emergent users – people in rural or developing regions where connectivity and technology availability are often low. I lead the department's HCI research group, and am also Director of the MSc year of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Enhancing Human Interactions and Collaborations with Data and Intelligence Driven Systems.

My current work is funded by the EPSRC grants UnMute, PV interfaces and Breaking the glass. I've previously been part of the Reshaping the expected future, Scaling the rural enterprise, Community-generated media for the next billion and Multimodal, negotiated interaction in mobile scenarios projects. CS-200 Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction

This module introduces the key principles and practices of human-computer interaction (HCI). It describes in detail the basic concepts, methods and issues surrounding interaction design, explores the properties which make good and poor interfaces and presents the major design principles in the discipline. Students will learn how to gather and analyse requirement data, how to prototype designs, how to construct more usable user interfaces and how to design and run user evaluations.
CS-M09 Future Interaction Technologies MRes Project

The FIT MRes research project provides students with the opportunity of exploring a particular topic in interaction technologies. The project will typically involve the development of an interactive system: specification, design, implementatation, testing, verification and evaluation. The project will enhance the students' competence in design, analysis, reasoning, experiments and evaluation. It will give students an intellectual challenge to their abilities to learn new subjects and to develop their abilities in literature searching, report writing, verbal presentation, project planning and time management.
CSCM69 Human-Centred Perspectives and Methods

This module provides the rationale and approaches to shaping system design with humans in mind. It gives an overview of the main topics in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and details a plethora of components including data structures and architectures that can be used in the construction of usable interactive systems. Students will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of HCI as well as learning by example from seminal research and state-of-the-art examples. Specific focus will be given to core human-centred approaches such as iterative design and running, analysing and interpreting data from user evaluations. Students will also be taught the basics of research methods for computer science, including how to construct research questions, critically analyse research papers, write literature reviews, perform presentations and write in a scientific manner.
CSPM40 Human-Centred Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Dissertation

This module will provide students with the opportunity to explore a particular topic in computer science in considerable depth.
