Tuition Fee Loan
Students living in Wales who are starting their studies at Swansea University in academic year 2022/23 can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the full cost of tuition fees (subject to terms and conditions). They can do this by applying to Student Finance Wales (SFW).
Tuition Fee Loan payments are made directly to the University upon confirmation of your attendance each term, therefore no up-front payment is required.
Maintenance Loan and Welsh Government Learning Grant
From 2022/23, all students living away from home will be entitled to £10,710 towards their maintenance costs, and all student living in the parental home will be entitled to £9,095. These awards will be made up of both Maintenance Loans and Grants.
All students will be entitled to a minimum grant of £1,000 and potentially more depending on household income.
The grant award will then be topped up with a loan to a maximum support of £10,710 (or £9,095) to ensure all students receive the same amount of funding towards their living costs.
If you continue to live with your parents, the amount of grant and loan you are entitled to based on your household income is shown below.
|Household Income||Maintenance Grant||Maintenance Loan - Living in parental home||Total Funding|
|£18,370 or less||£6,885||£2,210||£9,095|
If you do not live with your parents, the amount of grant and loan you are entitled too based on your household income is shown below.
|Household Income||Maintenance Grant||Maintenance Loan - Living away from home||Total Funding|
Maintenance payments are paid directly to you in 3 instalments. Your 1st instalment will be paid after you have enrolled and collected your ID card (the subsequent 2 instalments will be paid on the 1st day of the Spring and Summer terms).
Partial Cancellation of Maintenance Loan
Welsh funded students can also apply for a one-off partial cancellation of up to £1,500 on their Maintenance Loan.
To receive this cancellation, students will have to make a minimum early repayment of £5 towards their Maintenance Loan debt. The cancellation can only be applied once and is taken from the current balance that has been paid to the student. Therefore, it is advisable that students wait until they have received at least £1,500 of Maintenance Loan funding before making the early repayment.
Students with dependent children, childcare costs, adult dependents, a disability or are classed as a Care Leaver may be entitled to additional help.
